The paper examines the emergence of criticism of papers from 2009 to 2018 and seeks to identify the perceptions and expectations of the field in light of this criticism. It is argued that SHCI often takes on far more responsibility than can reasonably be expected, and the authors conclude by proposing 'green policy informatics' as a way for SHCI to respond to climate change using a more traditional mix of HCI skills.
This paper discusses the responsibilities of SHCI and proposals for how to promote development, which illustrate the following principles:
•HCI as usual vs. HCI must be rethought.
•Political differences are relevant vs. irrelevant.
•Sustainable Interaction Design
Discussion and reflection:
I was surprised that the history of SHCI does not seem to have had a particularly big impact, and this article makes suggestions at a macro level. The author suggests that SHCI could have a political impact by considering policy regime change, encouraging deeper thinking beyond the constraints of existing policy frameworks. This approach may facilitate the creation of new policies, rather than just "stitching up" existing ones, this view is enlightening.
